Q&A: Lucy Pottinger, Holland & Barrett International

Lucy Pottinger is head of category for ethical beauty and aromatherapy at Holland & Barrett.  A returning judge of this year’s ‘Innovation Pitch LIVE’, she’s looking forward to discovering more ‘innovative new trends’ at the show.

‘The Innovation Pitch LIVE to Holland & Barrett’ starts at 3pm in the Natural Products Talks Theatre on Monday 23 April.  The session will also feature CEO Peter Aldis, Lisa Sinclair (head of category for vitamins & supplements), and Nick Janda (Head of Trade Plan).

Why is it important to grow the natural and organic industry?

Natural and organic beauty is more than just a trend now, it’s truly gone mainstream.  For us, the move to beauty without the additions of things like SLS, Microplastics and Parabens isn’t a new one, but we know that for smaller suppliers, innovating in this space to a high standard can be costly, so we want to help support these businesses to grow with us and become part of Holland & Barrett’s beauty mission.

How important is Natural & Organic Products Europe to you and the sector?

Shows like Natural & Organic Products Europe are vital to us.  It’s where we find some of the best new ingredients, where you can spot a new trend a mile off, and it’s a great opportunity to meet suppliers who share our ethos of ethical cleaner beauty.

What do you want visitors to take away from your session at the show?

If you’ve seen us speak, you know how we work.  Products filled with scary sounding chemicals and additives just don’t appeal to our customers.  But if you’re truly bringing us innovative new trends, unique ingredients and a great brand ethos, we can work with you to grow your brand to new heights.  We’ve been at the forefront of so many trends: snail gel, bee venom, charcoal beauty.  If you’ve got the next one, come and talk to me!

Who or what inspires you to be even better?

My team, colleagues and peers across Holland & Barrett encourage and inspire me to do better every day — we are all working towards one thing which is to give our customers the opportunity to love healthier lives and look after our planet.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

Listen to your customers!  They are the end user and listening to them will give you the insight you need to be their chosen retailer/brand and help make a difference!
