Q&A: Lisa Sinclair, Holland & Barrett International

As Holland & Barrett’s head of category for vitamins & supplements, Lisa Sinclair calls the show a great “chance to meet some of the best innovators in the industry”.  She’s back judging this year’s Innovation Pitch LIVE, alongside the company’s CEO Peter Aldis.  Arrive early — this session promises to be standing room only!

Why is it important to grow the natural and organic industry?

This industry has always been at the forefront of VMS innovation.  In a rapidly changing regulatory market, it’s so encouraging to see companies that are continuing to develop new formulations, fund new research and promote the industry, and it’s up to us as an influential retailer in the sector to keep working with suppliers to grow their capabilities to create great products.

How important is Natural & Organic Products Europe to you and the sector?

Natural & Organic Products Europe has always been one of our most important shows.  It’s our chance to meet some of the best innovators in the industry, and to really understand the research behind each ingredient.

What do you want visitors to take away from your session at the show?

I hope you’ve managed to get a better idea of how Holland & Barrett works.  It’s a competitive category for us, but also one where we’ve created huge trends and will continue to work hard to do so.

The biggest thing I’d like brands to take away is the importance of not overclaiming!  You’ll know as well as we do, it’s a difficult regulatory area, and we need to know exactly what your product can and can’t legally do before we take conversations any further.  So be honest, clear and concise about your product’s benefits when you talk to us and we’ll help work with you to make your brand as successful as possible.

Who or what inspires you to be even better?

Our customers have always been my biggest inspiration in this role.  When we hear about how a product we have launched has helped change someone’s life, even in the smallest way, that’s what keeps you going in your mission to find the next amazing product to help more and more of our customers live a healthier life.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

You should never stop learning and improving your knowledge.  Even though we’ve been doing this job for a long time and at this point we think we’ve seen just about everything, there are always more studies, new formulations and new ingredients out there that are just waiting to be talked about, and we want to continue to be the best possible business to help our suppliers achieve this.
