Q&A: Anna Brightman, Optiat

Our next Q&A is with Anna Brightman, who co-founded Optiat with her brother William.  Despite only launching their first range in November 2016, Optiat now distribute their sustainable skincare products cross Europe and have more than 300 UK stockists including Topshop and Whole Foods Market.  Anna will be sharing her thoughts on ‘The rise of the Indie Brands’ on the show’s opening day (12pm, 22 April).

Why is it important to grow the natural and organic industry?

Whilst a lot of attention has historically been focused on what we food we put inside our bodies, people are beginning to scrutinise more closely what they are putting on their bodies too.  We pride ourselves on being the nature-friendly beauty company, and so having organic products, where possible (i.e. wherever this does not compromise our use of more sustainable repurposed ingredients), is very important to us.

The merits of organic certification are numerous: from strict criteria on ingredients (e.g. no irradiation, testing on animals or treatment with toxic chemicals) and manufacturing processes to only using certain recyclable packaging and having a waste management process in place, it certainly analyses all parts of the supply chain! Fundamentally, it empowers us all to have confidence that what we are putting on our skin can be trusted. And that will always be a good thing.

How important is Natural & Organic Products Europe to you and the sector?

It’s very important to us. We have exhibited in Malmo and London on multiple occasions and it has been a great success for us.  Not only is it fantastic to be able to see what else is out there, it also helps us to make new business connections that help us to grow our brand.

What do you want visitors to take away from your session at the show?

My session at the show is about how Optiat was formed to shake up the market, with sustainability and promoting a circular economy as our primary objectives.  Our hope is to demonstrate that we can all be more resourceful and we hope that in time this will inspire the beauty industry as a whole to be less wasteful.

Who or what inspires you to be even better?

Healthy competition! The beauty industry is very competitive and there are new brands popping up all the time. The bar is high, and I want to make sure that we at Optiat are always trying to raise it even higher.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

Conquer your fear, it’s the only thing that holds you back. Being the co-founder of a company constantly puts me in new and unfamiliar situations.  I’ve learnt quickly that you’ve got to get past your fears in order to propel yourself forwards to bigger and better things!
