Soil Association
Since it was founded in 1946, the Soil Association have been working to raise awareness about the positive health and environmental benefits of organic food and farming and supporting farmers in producing natural food consumers can trust… Today the Soil Association is the UK’s leading organic organisation, with over 180 staff based at its Bristol headquarters, in regional centres and working as certification inspectors across the country.
CHC – Consumers for Health Choice
CHC is an extraordinarily successful lobbying and campaigning group on natural health matters, capable of punching way above their weight on whatever issues they tackle. Much of their work is in challenging adverse EU legislation and pushing the appropriate regulators to use consistency, common sense and good judgement to favour consumers when framing laws that affect health. CHC respects the freedom of individual choice in health matters and strives to secure not just the availability of a wide range of safe products but honest and clear labelling so that consumers can make informed decisions about their health.
HFMA – The Health Food Manufacturers’ Association
The objects of the Association are to promote sales of health foods and allied products and to promote and protect the general interest of the members and of the health foods industry and in respect of nutrition and health, to be aware of and concerned with the interests of the consumer. The HFMA’s activities include, working effectively to represent the interests of the specialist health product sector at all levels of the legislative, regulatory and Parliamentary process, promoting training and education, and promoting the highest quality standards of products and services.
NAHS – The National Association of Health Stores
The NAHS was started in 1931 to represent the growing number of independent health food stores in the UK. It is the only organisation in the UK, which can claim to speak for such businesses and is run entirely by independent retailers. The NAHS seeks to promote to the public the benefits of shopping in locally-owned, independent health food stores and to ensure that there is a good standard of customer advice available in all its member stores. The NAHS also works with other organisations like Consumers for Health Choice (CHC) and the Health Food Manufacturers Association (HFMA) to ensure the maximum possible availability of health food and nutritional products.
Alliance for Natural Health
The Alliance for Natural Health International (ANH-Intl) represents an international non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting natural and sustainable approaches to healthcare. It upholds that the integrative medicine and functional medicine models, as well as many traditional healthcare systems that have evolved over millennia, are more appropriate means of dealing with today’s health challenges than the current dominant western medicine model, which is over-reliant on the use of pharmaceutical drugs. The ANH is working collaboratively to help facilitate the development of scientific and legal frameworks appropriate to natural healthcare.
Irish Association of Health Stores
The Irish Association of Health Stores (IAHS) is a professional trade association, which represents over 80% of the health stores in the Republic of Ireland. Health food is the fastest growing sector of food retailing in Ireland, and representing over 100 member stores, the IAHS exists to ensure that health food retailing is ethical, responsible, truthful and professional. Founded in 1986, the Association operates under a written constitution and member stores are required to adhere to a strict Code of Ethics.
The Fairtrade Foundation
The Fairtrade Foundation is a registered charity established in 1992 by CAFOD, Christian Aid, New Consumer, Oxfam, Traidcraft and the World Development Movement. These founding organisations were later joined by Britain’s largest women’s organisation – The Women’s Institute. The Foundation is the UK member of Fairtrade Labelling Organisations International (FLO), which unites 21 national initiatives across Europe, Japan, North America, Mexico and Australia/New Zealand.
Organic Food Federation
Established in 1986 to support the interests of a group of organic manufacturers, the Organic Food Federation continues to provide a professional and personal service to all its members. It is an EC approved organic certification body working under the member state code of ‘Organic Certification UK4′ and acting in accordance with EC Organic Regulations. Services include inspection and certification for farmers, growers, packers, processors, importers, retailers and wholesalers in the food sector. Other services include Aquaculture and Non Food Certification.
Organic Farmers & Growers
Organic Farmers & Growers (OF&G) is a leading UK certification body with a reputation for practical, efficient and friendly service. It is one of a number of certification bodies accredited by Defra and is approved to inspect organic production and processing in the UK. Whilst working within the UK and EU Regulations, OF&G prides itself on adopting a practical and realistic approach to organic production and the implementation of the Regulations – an approach which has attracted a number of the more commercially minded and hands-on producers to its ranks.

Compassion in World Farming
Compassion in World Farming (CIWF) was established in 1967 by dairy farmer Peter Roberts. Peter and his wife Anna had become increasingly concerned with the animal welfare issues connected to the new systems of intensive farming that began to take hold in the 1960s. Originally run from the Roberts’ family house, CIWF has grown into an organisation with offices in Ireland, France and Holland and representatives in seven more countries, including South Africa and Oceania. CIWF co-ordinates the European Coalition for Farm Animals, a campaigning and lobbying group of 32 organisations in 25 European countries and Israel. CIWF’s vision is a world where farm animals are treated with compassion and respect and where cruel factory farming practices end.
The Vegetarian Society
The Vegetarian Society of the United Kingdom is the oldest vegetarian organisation in the world. It is an educational charity promoting understanding and respect for vegetarian lifestyles. It offers expert advice on nutritional issues and provides free information to individuals, companies and organisations. It works behind the scenes with the food industry to improve provision. It gives vegetarians and vegans from all walks of life a louder, stronger, better-informed voice. ACCREDITATION: The Vegetarian Society Seedling Symbol trademark was first registered as an official trademark in 1969 and is currently the only vegetarian symbol, which is legally governed by a trademark licence agreement.
IFOAM
IFOAM’s mission is leading, uniting and assisting the organic movement in its full diversity. Its goal is the worldwide adoption of ecologically, socially, and economically sound systems that are based on the principles of Organic Agriculture. The IFOAM Organic Guarantee System assures organic integrity internationally. In the rapidly growing environment of marketing and trade of products claiming to be “organic,” IFOAM provides a market guarantee of the integrity of organic claims. The Organic Guarantee System (OGS) unites the organic world through a common system of standards, verification, and market identity. It fosters equivalence among participating certifiers, paving the way for more orderly and reliable trade.
Demeter
Demeter-International e. V. is a non profit organisation and its member organisations work together in the spirit of an international confederation with democratic principles. Demeter is the only ecological association that has built up a network of individual certification organisations world-wide. In 1997 Demeter-International was founded for closer co-operation in the legal, economic and spiritual spheres. Presently Demeter International has 16 member organisations from Europe, America, Africa and New Zealand. Thus Demeter-International represents more than 4.200 Demeter producers in 43 countries.
